VAA Community Quilt
Postcards from Vashon
I turn the card rack slowly
It creaks and turns
Which card should I pick?
Point Robinson Lighthouse,
The ferry, Tramp Harbor?
Shall I pick the one showing
Sunrise over Burton Peninsula,
Or sunset over Lisabuella?
Perhaps the one that depicts the
Four seasons of Fisher Pond.
The rack slowly goes ‘round,
Postcard of Strawberry Festival
The Parade, booths and stages
Filled with Island Musicians-
Turning like a carnival tilt-a-whirl.
I see Island faces-friends, family, community
Smiling from amongst the postcards.
Postcards from Vashon
A tilt-a-whirl of familiar
Mementos to send and to save.
The 2008 Vashon Allied Arts’ Community quilt is all about postcards.
What picture of Vashon/Maury Island would you like to turn into a postcard?
How about the view from your back window? That’s what Pat
Stougard did on her postcard entitled “The Best of Everything.” Kirt
Haupt and Joanna Guglielmino take a walk at Point Robinson, capture
pictures of an Island landmark (Point Robinson Lighthouse) and
Joanna turns it into a fabric postcard.
Chris McGrath captures an early morning moment of beauty, sunrise
over Burton Marina and Peninsula. Annie Mirsch takes us off or back
to the Island with a ferry. Carrie Sikorski brings us to Saturday
Market at the Village Green. Sy Novak, Sharon Munger, Mary Belshaw
focus on Island art. Toni Eaton and Eileen Bergman celebrate
holidays. Angela Weiss takes us sailing on The Bounty of Krister.
Mitsuno Matsuda serves up strawberries (from a photograph snapped in
the 1960’s) on a fabric postcard sewn by Karen Pruett.
Nan Caskey shares her interpretation the Bicycle Tree from Ray
Pfortner’s photograph. Cyna Brandt reminds us of historic Island
institution, The Portage Store. Eileen Bergman and Catholine Tribble
joined forces to replicate the ‘Here We Are’ postcard designed by
Bev Winge in 1966. Nancy Sipple even provides our own Vashon
Strawberry Festival stamp, placed in the quilt’s upper right hand
corner of course.
“Postcards from Vashon” celebrates 23 years of Vashon Allied Arts’
community quilts. It’s the best quilt ever! And best of all proceeds
support VAA programs. Tickets are only $1 so please buy bunches. One
lucky person will take home this special postcard. Why not you? ~
